Владимир Котельников British and American Aircra...
ISBN: 9781915070883 Год издания: 2022 Издательство: Helion & Company Limited Аннотация
Back in 1906, the Wright Brothers offered their biplane to the Russian Ministry of War, but tsarist generals were not interested in this aircraft. In the course of the formation of Russian military aviation in 1910–1911 the regime began to acquire British and American airplanes in large numbers. Their role conceded significantly to the influence of French designs, and under the Provisional Government in 1917 supplies from Britain increased, licences were obtained there for several types that were to be built in Russia. In the Civil War years the Entente powers supported the whites and the British sent their Air Force units and supplied aircraft. The Red Army had the imported airplanes at their disposal from the stores, as well as aircraft captured from the interventionists and the whites.
In the period of the post-war resurgence of Soviet aviation, a considerable number of British aircraft was acquired. They augmented, to a large extent, the Soviet Air Force fleet. The R-1 reconnaissance aircraft (based on the DH.9) and the U-1 training aircraft (the Avro 504), were put into production on the basis of trophy examples. Prior to the mid-1930s the R-1 biplane was the most widespread aircraft in Soviet aviation, and was also exported. This aircraft type participated in a series of local conflicts, and moreover, the R-1 was not a copy of a British original, but a Soviet modification. In this period, examples of various military and civil airplanes were also purchased in Britain, to serve as study aids.
From the end of the 1920s onwards almost all the aircraft operating in the USSR were indigenously produced machines. The purchase of examples in Britain continued, however, but not everything that was on the purchase list was actually acquired, rejections would often arise over security concerns, or there was no willingness to sell individual airplanes.
Following President T. Roosevelt's accession to power in the USA, the centre of gravity for Soviet aviators shifted to the United States. In the mid-1930s a series of licensing agreements were concluded, and as a result three American types entered series production in the Soviet Union. Of these, the most widespread was the PS-84 (the Li-2), the Soviet variant of the DC-3. The history of these types is documented in full, taking the story beyond the confines of 1941. The introduction of American technology, and of new materials, really made a difference to Soviet aircraft manufacturing.
Apart from that, individual examples of aircraft were purchased in the USA for polar aviation, search and rescue, and for record-breaking long-range flights. Some British and American aircraft emerged after the Baltic States became part of the USSR, and these machines entered both civil and military aviation.
The author spent a great deal of time searching for the materials that formed the basis of this book in various archives, museums, libraries, and private collections. This subject has never been covered so broadly before, nor in such detail. The publication comes with a large number of illustrations, some of which are published for the first time. -
Владимир Котельников Lend-Lease and Soviet Aviat...
ISBN: 9781914059599 Год издания: 2021 Издательство: Helion & Company Limited Аннотация
Seventy years have passed since the Second World War yet the books and articles still keep coming in a never-ending stream discussing the question of what role the deliveries of arms and materials by Soviet allies played in the victory of the Red Army. In Russia, the American Bell P-39 Airacobra fighter along with the Studebaker US6 truck and canned stewed meat became the symbols of Allied help to the USSR during the Second World War. Other aircraft which arrived to the country under the Lend-Lease program are less known but also made a valuable contribution to the victory. The author of this book for the first time has assembled a huge volume of information related to the delivery of aviation equipment from UK and USA. Based on documents from Russian and foreign archives, museums, and veterans' recollections, the author has made a qualitative and quantitative appraisal of the influence of these deliveries upon the Soviet war effort and airpower during the conflict. The book details the routes of the aircraft deliveries to Russia, the modifications which were done in order to suit the demands of the Russian climate and specifics of their front-line use, as well as the process of the new aircraft being mastered by the units of the Red Army Air Force. The first foreign aircraft arrived in the Soviet Union with No. 151 Wing RAF in 1941, and their use expanded rapidly - they took part in the counteroffensive near Moscow, the battles for Stalingrad and the Kursk salient, and operations of the war up to the battle for Berlin and the capitulation of Japanese forces in the North China. The author includes the results of the combat assessments of the aircraft, which were done at the Scientific Testing Institute of the Air Force, as well as reports from front-line regiments, and multiple combat episodes, detailing the views of the Soviet designers and pilots on the British and American aircraft. A separate chapter provides information about the aircraft which were not officially delivered but appeared in the Soviet Union accidentally. For the first time an attempt has been made to assess the influence of the deliveries of material and equipment upon the Soviet aviation industry and war effort. The author’s impressive text is supported by nearly 700 colour and b/w photographs, 100 colour aircraft profiles, plus maps, charts etc. -
Владимир Котельников Red Assault: Soviet Airborn...
ISBN: 9781912390793 Год издания: 2019 Издательство: Helion & Company Limited Аннотация
In the 1930s Red Army Command maintained what was often an offensive doctrine. The plan was to fight a bloodless victory on foreign ground. An offensive by the Worker's and Peasant's Red Army was to unfold as per the classic Blitzkrieg - it was with good reason that some of the higher ranking commanders had studied at the German General Headquarters Academy. Furthermore all the technical achievements of the period were taken into account. The assault would begin with air strikes from strategic aviation: armadas of huge bombers would attack key targets deep inside enemy territory. At the same time enormous numbers of airborne troops would be dropped behind enemy lines, armed with a range of equipment. These airborne troops would capture bridges, and roads, and take communications, and transport links out of action. Heralded by a powerful artillery attack, supported by tactical aviation the tanks, armoured vehicles, and trucks carrying motorised infantry would advance. There was a basis for such optimistic forecasts. Since the Soviets were in possession of such a quantitative, and qualitative advantage (and this was certainly the case) they were definitely able to advance. In the USSR aviation was undergoing development ahead of schedule, as were armoured tank technology, airborne assault troops, and chemical weapons. If the Soviets had tanks, aircraft, and chemical weapons, albeit in small quantities, any potential enemies would possess them too. The airborne assault troops however were a distinctly Soviet innovation. In this respect it was the Soviets that held an unquestionable advantage. It was here that the first groups of airborne paratroopers were dropped, and the first tanks and guns were dropped from the skies. The Red Army was conducting mass airborne assault operations during the course of exercises when no other nation on Earth had airborne assault troops. In other field’s Soviet military science and technology in many cases copied existing Western achievements. Licenses were obtained, or examples of foreign materiel were simply copied. As far as the airborne troops were concerned the Soviet military, and the designers were in unchartered territory, having come up with a number of innovative solutions, which were later adopted by the armed forces of other nations. In this book the armament, equipment, and military hardware developed for airborne troops is described, both in terms of the actual technology, and the clearly fantastical, which only reflected the unrestrained imagination of the designers. A significant amount of attention is devoted to the aircraft, from which it was planned airborne troops would be dropped. The exercises that saw airborne troop drops are described, as well as the role airborne troops played in actual operations in the period up to 1941. This book has been written on the basis of a number of documents that the author has discovered in the archives, and in museum collections. This work draws upon the memoirs of the pioneer military paratroopers in the USSR, some of which have never been published before.
