An Essay on Typography was first published in 1931, instantly recognized as a classic, and has long been unavailable. It represents Gill at his best opinionated, fustian, and consistently humane. It is his only major work on typography and remains indispensable for anyone interested in the art of letter forms and the presentation of graphic information.

This manifesto, however, is not only about letters their form, fit, and function but also about man's role in an industrial society. As Gill wrote later, it was his chief object "to describe two worlds that of industrialism and that of the human workman & to define their limits."

Когда бы в Московском полиграфическом институте (мпи), где я учился в 1960-е годы, существовала официальная религия, это наверняка был бы культ Владимира Андреевича Фаворского. В нашем святилище Фаворскому принадлежало особое место. Полиграфический факультет Вхутемаса, где он преподавал в 1920-е и 1930-е годы, после многих реорганизаций стал факультетом художественно-технического оформления печатной продукции (хтопп) мпи.
В истории искусства XX века Вхутемас, институт - побратим веймарского Баухауза, известен как рассадник радикальных художественных идей и экспериментов... Для нас, студентов мпи, это представляло предмет особой гордости, словно мы и вправду были прямыми потомками легендарного советского авангарда. Некоторые из былых студентов, а точнее учеников, Фаворского преподавали у нас живопись, композицию и иллюстрацию.
Разумеется, Фаворский, в отличие от многих мастеров революционного авангарда, не был ни радикалом, ни сотрясателем основ. Он следовал высокой традиции классического искусства и - очень своеобразно, по-своему - развивал её. Он черпал своё вдохновение в разных периодах европейского и русского искусства, а также в богатом и разнообразном наследии древних культур Востока.

Автор тщательно анализирует каждую букву русского алфавита, рассуждает о том, почему наши знаки для письма не столь красивы, как их латинские родственники, и что с этим может сделать дизайнер (не обязательно профессиональный шрифтовик).
