The same year, 1757, he published his second book, A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful. Actually, this had been written while Burke was a student at Trinity, but he had spent some time polishing and refining it. The Sublime and Beautiful enjoyed its greatest success in Germany, where its psychological method appealed more than it did to an English audience. Especially affected by it were Lessing and Kant.
