"Confessions of an English Opium-Eater" (1821) relates Thomas De Quincey's early life and experiences of opium addiction at a time when that drug was widely used for the relief of pain, and before its addictive qualities were properly understood. It is a work which encompasses amusement with nightmare as the author experiences in turn the marvels of opium-induced dreams and the equally vivid nightmares which are their counterpoint.

Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859) is a central figure of English Romanticism. Confessions of an English Opium Eater, his best-known work, is an account of his early life and opium addiction. De Quincey lived his full three score years and ten. But few would have predicted it, for his father and numerous of his siblings were carried off by tuberculosis. He owed his survival to opium: its powers kept the disease at bay, but in trade it kept De Quincey its slave. When the physical life hangs by a thread, nature often compensates with another gift. With De Quincey, it was his intellect, from which came this offering which lives to this day.

"I here present you, courteous reader, with the record of a remarkable period in my life: according to my application of it, I trust that it will prove not merely an interesting record, but in a considerable degree useful and instructive." So begins «The Confessions of an English Opium-Eater.» Originally published in two parts in the «London Magazine» in 1821, it is a gripping account of one Englishman's addiction to opium. Thomas De Quincey details the effects of his opium use and in so doing warns the reader of the dangers and terrors of serious drug addiction.
