It turns out he’s already written everything I was looking for while he was writing it. The novel Best Served Cold, written in 2009, didn’t come out in Russian until 2013. And how good it is!
But because of the female main character, I stretched out the reading. She’s the one part that didn’t work. She’s a bit too much of a “woman” for something as brutal as war. But then, war itself is a feminine word.
The novel is packed with battle-hardened wisdom, almost like a collection of quotes you might find on social media. But we’ll easily forgive that.
