В компактной и ясной форме трактат дает отчетливую трактовку основных проблем неоплатонизма. На основании этого трактата становится ясным многое даже у Ямвлиха, который писал много, но разбросанно и несистематично (вдобавок к тому, что триадическая диалектика мифологии Ямвлиха сохранилась в неясных фрагментах).

Гай Саллюстий Крисп (86 до н. э. - 35 до н. э.) - древнеримский историк, реформатор античной историографии, оказавший значительное влияние на Тацита и других историков.
Саллюстий стал одним из первых римских историков, кто ввёл в исторические произведения развёрнутые речи главных героев, призванные лучше подчеркнуть особенности их характера и политической ориентации. Также одним из первых бросил критический взгляд на недавнюю историю Рима. От его главного труда, «Истории», сохранились незначительные отрывки. Более известны две небольших исторических монографии - «О заговоре Катилины» и «Югуртинская война». Теоретической основой трудов Саллюстия стало учение об упадке нравов, согласно которому причиной кризиса Римской республики стал отход от традиционных добродетелей к господству честолюбия и жадности.
Помимо упомянутых выше сочинений древнеримского историка, в книгу вошли: отрывки из большого неисторического труда, речь консула Лепида против Суллы, речь Филиппа против Лепида, письмо Помпея к Сенату, речь трибуна Лициния к народу, письмо Мадридата к Арзаку, речь консула А. Котты к народу, письма Саллюстия к Цезарю, речь против Цицерона, приписываемая Саллюстию, ответ Цицерона Саллюстию.
К сочинениям Саллюстия, собранным в представленной книге, приложено его жизнеописание, написанное французским историком де Броссом, а также перевод четырех речей Цицерона по поводу заговора Катилины, описанного Саллюстием.

Gaius Sallustius Crispus, or Sallust, was a renowned Roman historian and a decided partisan of Caesar. After his retirement from statesmanship, Sallust devoted his time to the writing of literary and historical works that focused on great persons and events of his age. Although a lesser-known Roman historian, Sallust has become particularly revered for his intention to write scholarly, not merely anecdotal, discussions of events. Nietzsche described his style as “compact, severe, with as much substance as possible, a cold sarcasm against ‘beautiful words’ and ‘beautiful sentiments’.” His “Jugurthine War” relates the war in Numidia, circa 112 BC, of which Rome was the victor. It is most valued for his introduction, in which Sallust gives commentary on the moral decay and discord of the Roman political scene, and of his longing for the forgotten ideals of Rome. In his “Catiline’s Conspiracy”, Sallust’s deep concern for the decline of Rome is evident through the events and conspiracies of Catiline and his followers in the year 63 BC. Also included in this collection are the extant fragments of Sallust’s “Histories”.
